How to Avoid Hitting a Deer

Hitting a deer can really cost you. While some collisions are unavoidable, you can be proactive.

• One—If you see a deer, slow down immediately and stay on the road. The worst deer accidents are those where the driver veered off-road. Given the vast amount of rocks and trees in our area, veering off road is not only more damaging to your car, but more dangerous for you and your passengers.
• Two—Be vigilant. Where there’s one deer, there’s probably more.
• Three—Drive defensively and give yourself plenty of time during periods where deer are most likely to be active.
• Four—Buckle up. It won’t prevent a collision, but it will help keep you protected.
• Five—Pay attention to road signs. If you see one, you are in a heavy deer area.
